Päivän ja yön talo/House of Day, House of Night

I just finished the novel ” House of Day, House of Night” of Olga Tokarczuk. The work proceeds in fragments, but they still are connected with each other  like a set of flashing lights; I fancy!

Tokarczuk speaks intimately about ordinary everyday issues and mindsets of people. She also conjures in front of you both secular and sacral mystics.  They both – everyday life and mystics – however are melted trickily together so that it´s interesting  and entertaining to read the text.

There are many scenes and sentences in the book, which include informal learning  to all of us, to teachers, too. Here´re two samples:

– “I said to Marta that we all have two houses, the one, which is connected with time and place, and the other for eternity, which has no address and architectural drawings and shapes. And we live simultaneously in both of them.”

– “The self-planted silencing born around us spread out to every directions, and took greedily  all space from us. There was nothing to breath.  The longer we ware silent, the harder it was to say anything.  All topics to speak ware felt  distant and insignificant for us.”
